Paleontologists may be scrambling for their reference books, but readers of the respected weekly newsletter, Real Estate Finance & Investment, recently learned all about the "opportunavore." In a front page article headlined "Wien & Malkin: the Opportunavore," the newsletter, published by Institutional Investor, described in detail our successful approach to long-term direct real estate investment, which combines a patient search for opportunity with conservative leverage and underwriting. "We are opportunavores," Anthony E. Malkin told the reporter, explaining that Wien & Malkin is attracted to opportunities that allow us to create value and capitalize on inefficiencies in a variety of markets and types of real estate, such as capital shortages, poor management, and/or the absence of widely available, reliable information. Despite the pre-historic-sounding term, however, Wien & Malkin is no dinosaur. Real Estate Finance & Investment noted that in the last three months of 2002 and the first quarter of this year, the firm was involved in some $300 million of transactions involving property sales, acquisitions and structured equity deals. The article appeared in the newsletter's March 31 edition.
